One of the aspects of our garden sheds that makes them stand out from competitors is their durability. We understand that a wood shed can appear to be a sizeable investment at first, so of course you’re going to want stellar value for money with a shed that stands the test of time.
With the unpredictable weather in the UK a large contributing factor to the deterioration of garden sheds, we use pressure treated timber that can withstand long periods of hot weather and sunshine, or bitterly cold winters with torrential rain. So, no matter how hot and dry or wet and cold it is, you can rest assured that your shed will reach the other side unscathed. To maintain the quality of your shed, we recommend applying a wood preserver treatment annually.
Of course, we can only estimate the lifespan of our garden sheds, as there are many other factors that can cause wear and tear. We recommend a timeframe of around 15 years using one of our well-built wooden sheds before you might want to think about upgrading or replacing the shed.
At Solid Sheds, we’re known for having the best value for money sheds on the market, and that won’t change! Though we boast some of the most well-made models around, this doesn’t drive up the price of our garden sheds, as we keep them affordable at all times.
With our competitively priced sheds, you can be sure that you’re always making a smart purchase. By browsing our collections of different shed styles and clicking on each product page, you’ll find price guides explaining the price points of that shed design according to custom specifications, such as the floor size and the number of windows.
When you buy from the Solid Sheds website, delivery and assembly are included for your purchase at no extra cost. If you’d like to find out more about our garden sheds for sale, don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team today by calling 01695 51442 or using our online contact form.
Finding the most suitable spot to locate your wooden shed is important, even in limited spaces. Sheds need to be situated on level ground with no drainage issues, so it’s not likely to flood and cause damp. It’s also advisable to ensure there’s at least 18 inches of clearance around each side to allow ventilation and access for maintenance.
It’s best to place wooden sheds in areas shaded by the main building while still receiving natural light, to prevent overheating and sun bleaching. However, avoid positioning your garden shed under trees or overhanging plants, as falling debris can cause damage and will require cleaning the roof more frequently.
Before choosing a product from Solid Sheds, you should measure your garden and assess the available space to help you figure out where the shed should go. Remember to allow extra room for roof overhangs and opening doors or windows. The purpose of your shed may also determine its placement – for example, do you need it close to the house for easy access to stored items, or at the bottom of the garden for some peace and quiet?
For the majority of domestic sheds, planning permission isn’t required. That said, there are some restrictions on size and placement for larger garden sheds. To avoid the need to apply for planning permission and install your dream shed faster, the shed must not be:
- Larger than half of the garden space
- More than 3 metres high with a pent roof
- More than 4 metres high with an apex roof
- Within 2 metres of a boundary if over 2.5 metres high
- Closer to a public highway than the main dwelling
- In front of the property
In the case of listed buildings and conservation areas where development is restricted, you’ll need to apply for planning permission even if the shed is in line with the conditions above. Outbuildings with floor space of 15-30 square metres may also need planning permission, especially if they are intended as a living or sleeping place.
If you’ll be using your shed as a private art studio or other domestic space such as a home gym or reading nook, you shouldn’t need to apply for any extra permissions. However, if you intend to use the shed for commercial reasons such as working from home, you’ll need to apply for approval under UK outbuilding regulations. You can find out more on the government’s Planning Portal website, or by contacting your local authority.
All securely placed sheds require a solid flat base underneath, whether that’s a raised platform or simple paving slabs. Our sheds have floors that are made from robust preservative-treated wood with a vapour barrier membrane, so it’s often fine to place smaller sheds directly on the ground as long as the surface is level. For larger heavy-duty garden sheds, it may be best to hire a contractor to pour a solid concrete base.
Since the weather in the UK is unfortunately often quite wet, it’s best to be doubly sure that the shed floor is safe from unwanted moisture by setting the structure on a base. In addition to garden sheds for sale, we also offer solid shed bases in a variety of sizes, and free site surveys to assess the best possible installation technique. Contact Solid Sheds today either online or by phone on 01695 51442 with any enquiries you might have about our shed bases or site surveys.
