All products from Solid Sheds are made from durable redwood, which is treated with preservatives in a vacuum pressure impregnation plant to guarantee longstanding protection against rot and decay. When we deliver your new garden shed, our team will build it for you there and then to ensure professional quality construction.
Should you prefer to collect your wooden shed and self-build instead, you’ll benefit from a 10% saving on the cost of your shed. Alternatively, if you would like delivery only, this comes with a 5% saving. How long does a wooden shed last?

What is the best placement for a garden shed?
Finding the most suitable spot to locate your wooden shed is important, even in limited spaces. Sheds need to be situated on level ground with no drainage issues, so it’s not likely to flood and cause damp. It’s also advisable to ensure there’s at least 18 inches of clearance around each side to allow ventilation and access for maintenance.
It’s best to place wooden sheds in areas shaded by the main building while still receiving natural light, to prevent overheating and sun bleaching. However, avoid positioning your garden shed under trees or overhanging plants, as falling debris can cause damage and will require cleaning the roof more frequently.
Before choosing a product from Solid Sheds, you should measure your garden and assess the available space to help you figure out where the shed should go. Remember to allow extra room for roof overhangs and opening doors or windows. The purpose of your shed may also determine its placement – for example, do you need it close to the house for easy access to stored items, or at the bottom of the garden for some peace and quiet?
Do you need planning permission for a garden office or summer house?
For the majority of domestic sheds, planning permission isn’t required. That said, there are some restrictions on size and placement for larger garden sheds. To avoid the need to apply for planning permission and install your dream shed faster, the shed must not be:
- Larger than half of the garden space
- More than 3 metres high with a pent roof
- More than 4 metres high with an apex roof
- Within 2 metres of a boundary if over 2.5 metres high
- Closer to a public highway than the main dwelling
- In front of the property
In the case of listed buildings and conservation areas where development is restricted, you’ll need to apply for planning permission even if the shed is in line with the conditions above. Outbuildings with floor space of 15-30 square metres may also need planning permission, especially if they are intended as a living or sleeping place.
If you’ll be using your shed as a private art studio or other domestic space such as a home gym or reading nook, you shouldn’t need to apply for any extra permissions. However, if you intend to use the shed for commercial reasons such as working from home, you’ll need to apply for approval under UK outbuilding regulations. Does my wooden shed need a base?
All securely placed sheds require a solid flat base underneath, whether that’s a raised platform or simple paving slabs. Our sheds have floors that are made from robust preservative-treated wood with a vapour barrier membrane, so it’s often fine to place smaller sheds directly on the ground as long as the surface is level. For larger heavy-duty garden sheds, it may be best to hire a contractor to pour a solid concrete base.
Since the weather in the UK is unfortunately often quite wet, it’s best to be doubly sure that the shed floor is safe from unwanted moisture by setting the structure on a base.
