Why insulating your shed is so important

A shed can be useful all year round, and not just in the summer months! Nowadays, more and more people are converting their area for garden storage to somewhere that can become a social hub of the house. Here at Solid Sheds, we are all for it. We love hearing the ideas that our creative customers have for our sheds. But, as we approach the colder months, you may want to think about insulating your shed properly to make sure that the heat is kept in, keeping you warm and toasty and protected from the dipping temperatures outside.

In this blog, the team at Solid Sheds is on hand to tell you about the importance of insulation for your shed and why it can improve its functionality and appeal for many years to come!

Why should you insulate your shed?

Don’t get us wrong, insulating your shed isn’t the be all and end all of preserving your shed. If you are purely using your shed as a storage facility, and you’re unlikely to spend prolonged periods of time in there, then it may not be worth your time (or money!) in doing so.

But, if you are looking to convert your shed into somewhere you may be spending more time, such as a movie room, workshop, or pub shed for example, then insulating beforehand is a wise move. This allows you to keep snug during those winter months, so a constant draft won’t cause you any discomfort. It also means you are more likely to continue to use your shed even during winter, as opposed to having it as a summer exclusive building.

Things to consider before insulating your shed

Insulating your new or existing wood shed isn’t as easy as getting straight into the nitty-gritty of applying it. There are some important things to consider before you start on insulating. You should ensure that any windows and doors are sturdy and tight, so you are not immediately losing the heat that your insulation is trying to keep in! Also, be sure to look for any gaps that are causing a leakage in the roof or floor, and seal gaps in the cladding that could also compromise insulation.

Once you have diagnosed and repaired these problems or performed the necessary checks, then you are good to go!

How do I insulate my shed?

To insulate your shed yourself, you will first want to purchase some high quality breathable membrane from your local DIY shop. They are sold in rolls, which mean you can easily cut them to size to provide the perfect fit for your shed, no matter what shape or size!

You can then apply this membrane to the outer panels of your shed, and then attach it to the beams that run downwards via a staple or hot glue gun. Then apply your wooden slab over the top so the membrane can’t be seen during the final design of your shed.
